Every wooden toy brand starts the same way. Someone notices a gap. Maybe the toys on the shelf are too loud, too plastic, too disposable. Maybe they have a design idea that no one is making. Maybe they see parents searching for something calmer and safer. The idea is easy. The execution is not. At OKEYKIDS, the children’s toy brand of Wenzhou Times Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd., we have spent 24 years making wooden toys for Europe and North America. We have worked with first-time founders and established retailers. Here is the roadmap we wish more of them had at the start.

Step 1: Define the brand before the product.
Most founders start with a toy. That is backwards. Start with a sentence. Who is this for? What does it replace? Why wooden? A brand that says “safe wooden toys for design-conscious parents who want less screen time” is different from one that says “affordable wooden toys for daycare centers.” The product follows the sentence. The packaging follows the product. The pricing follows the packaging. Write the sentence first. Then design the toy.
Step 2: Choose a manufacturing partner who can grow with you.
Your first order will be small. Your second will be larger. Your third may require new packaging, new age grading, or a new finish. A good partner can handle all three without starting over. Ask three questions before you commit. Can you show me a sample batch record? Who owns the test reports? What happens when a batch fails? At OKEYKIDS, design, sampling, production, and quality control work under one roof. That means your second order looks like your first, only bigger. Every product is tested to EN71 and ASTM F963 standards. We use water-based paints and child-safe finishes. Batch records are kept. If a toy does not pass, it does not ship.

Step 3: Budget for compliance, not just product.
EN71 and ASTM F963 testing costs money. CE marking and CPC certification take time. Labeling requirements vary by market. New founders often budget for the toy and forget the paperwork. The paperwork is not optional. It is the difference between a product that sells and a product that gets stopped at the border. Build compliance into your first cost sheet. Then choose a supplier who can support it with clear documentation.
Step 4: Design packaging as part of the product.
Your box is the first thing a customer sees online and the last thing they touch before opening. It carries your brand, your age warnings, your barcode, and your story. Do not leave it until the end. Natural kraft paper, muted colors, and clean typography work well for wooden toys. They signal quality without shouting. We work with founders to align packaging with product design so nothing is rushed.

Step 5: Start small, learn fast, then scale.
Your first order is a test. Not just of the product, but of the packaging, the shipping, the reviews, and the reorder rate. A good partner will support a modest first run and then scale with you. Because our process is integrated, changes move quickly and communication stays clear. For OEM/ODM founders, we can adjust materials, finishes, age grading, packaging, and branding to match your market.
If you are launching a wooden toy brand, start with the sentence. Then find a partner who can grow with it. Explore OKEYKIDS at https://www.okeykids.com/ or request our catalog. We would be glad to show you how we work.
