A wooden toy is an investment. Like any investment, it lasts longer when it is cared for. Yet most parents never receive clear guidance on cleaning wooden toys. They worry about damaging the finish, warping the wood, or using the wrong product. At OKEYKIDS, the children's toy brand of Wenzhou Times Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd., we have spent 24 years making wooden toys for Europe and North America. Here is what we tell our own partners—and what retailers can share with their customers.

Daily cleaning: less is more.
Most wooden toys do not need daily washing. A dry or slightly damp soft cloth is enough for routine cleaning. Wipe the surface gently. Do not soak. Do not scrub. Wood is porous. Excess water can swell the grain, lift the finish, or encourage mold in humid climates. For everyday use, a quick wipe after play is sufficient. This is especially true for toys used by older children who are past the mouthing stage.
Deep cleaning: gentle and infrequent.
When a deeper clean is needed—after illness, after a sticky snack, or before passing a toy to a younger sibling—use a mild approach. Mix a small amount of gentle dish soap with lukewarm water. Dampen a soft cloth. Wring it out well. Wipe the toy. Then wipe again with a clean, damp cloth to remove residue. Dry immediately with a dry towel. Never submerge wooden toys in water. Never put them in a dishwasher. Never use bleach, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners. These can damage the finish and leave residues that are not safe for children. Every OKEYKIDS product is tested to EN71 and ASTM F963 standards. We use water-based paints and child-safe finishes. Edges are rounded. Small parts are checked and rechecked. Batch records are kept. If a toy does not pass, it does not ship.

What to avoid.
Three things damage wooden toys most often. First, prolonged moisture. Second, harsh chemicals. Third, direct heat or sunlight. Keep wooden toys away from radiators, direct sun, and damp basements. If a toy becomes wet, dry it promptly with a soft towel and let it air dry at room temperature. Do not use a hair dryer. Do not place it in an oven. Wood moves slowly. Let it dry slowly.
What about sanitizing?
For childcare settings and shared toys, sanitizing matters. Use a child-safe sanitizing wipe or a diluted vinegar solution on a damp cloth. Wipe the surface. Dry immediately. Avoid alcohol-based sanitizers that can strip the finish. If you are unsure, test on a small area first. Retailers can include a simple care card with every wooden toy purchase. It builds trust. It reduces returns. It answers a question most customers have but rarely ask.

What this means for buyers.
For brands and retailers, care instructions are not a small detail. They reduce returns, reduce complaints, and extend product life. A toy that is cleaned correctly looks better longer. It stays in the home longer. It gets handed down. For OEM/ODM buyers, we can include custom care cards, packaging inserts, and branded maintenance guidance with your order. Because design, sampling, production, and quality control work under one roof, we can adapt these details quickly to match your market.
